Blackjack (Poker Client)

In Blackjack, the object of the game is to beat the dealer by having a hand that totals 21 (without going over) or is closer to 21 than the dealer's hand.

Rules

  1. Dealer must draw to 16
  2. Dealer stands on soft 17
  3. Blackjack pays 3:2
  4. Insurance pays 2:1
  5. Even Money pays 1:1
  6. Double Down on any first two cards
  7. Double Down on Splits
  8. No re-splits

Betting

  1. Click on the chip to select the desired bet amount.
  2. Click on 1, 2, or 3 of the Bet circles to place your initial bet(s). To remove the last chip placed, click on the Undo button. To remove all placed bets, click on the Clear button.
  3. Click on the Deal button to have the cards dealt.
  4. Additional bets once the cards have been dealt include Double Down and Split bets, as well as options to take Insurance and Even Money (each is described below).

Three bet circles enable you to play up to three hands at a time.
When playing multiple hands or splitting hands, a green arrow appears under the cards in play to indicate such.
Use the Same Bet button to repeat your last bet. This will also auto-deal the cards.

Card Values Hard 9 / Soft 19

Aces can be used as either 1 or 11. Any hand that includes an ace has two values... a soft value and a hard value. I.e. if the hand is an ace-8, the hard value is 9, the soft value is 19. This hand would be able to play as an 9 or 19.
The King, Queen, Jack and Ten are 10 points each; all other cards are worth their face values.

If the player's first two cards total 21 it's a Blackjack. Blackjack is the highest hand.

Playing

Player and dealer are dealt two cards each. Both player's cards are dealt face up. The dealer's first card is dealt face down, the second card face up.

If the dealer's upcard is a 10 or and Ace, the following 3 dealer actions take place:

  1. Upcard is 10: Checking for Blackjack - If the dealer has a 10 showing, he will check for blackjack by 'peeking' at his downcard and announcing 'Checking for Blackjack'. If the dealer does not have blackjack, the hand continues. If the dealer has blackjack and the player doesn't, the player loses the hand without continuing. In cases where both dealer and player have blackjack, a push is declared.
  2. Upcard is Ace: Offer Insurance - When the dealer's up card is an ace, and the player does not have blackjack, the player is offered insurance. Taking insurance means the player makes a second bet (the value of which is half the original bet) that the dealer has blackjack. If the dealer has blackjack, the player loses their initial bet but is paid 2 to 1 on the insurance bet. If the dealer does not have blackjack, the insurance bet is lost and the hand is played out as normal.
  3. Upcard is Ace: Offer Even Money - If the dealer's up card is an Ace and the player has a blackjack, the player is offered 'even money'. Taking even money means the player believes the dealer also has blackjack.

When taking even money, the player is instantly paid 1:1 by doubling the player's chip amount in the bet circle, and play on the hand ends.

When taking even money, the player gives up the normal 3:2 payoff, whether the dealer has blackjack or not.
For hands that continue after the dealer actions, any of the following conditions may apply for the player:

  1. Hit and Stand - On any hands where the player doesn't have a blackjack, the player may stand (refuse any further cards), or hit (accept another card). A player can hit as often as desired until they select stand or they bust (exceed 21). When you bust, you immediately lose your bet regardless of the dealer's hand result.
  2. Double Down (player hands only) - You are betting that your hand can be won with one more card.

Double downs cannot be applied to a blackjack hand. A player may only double down on their first two cards. When a player doubles down, the original bet is automatically doubled (a second chip appears) and the player receives one more card.
Note: You can also double down after splitting a pair.
  3. Split (player hands only) - if you are dealt two cards of the same value (such as two eights or a Jack and Queen), the hand can be split into two separate hands.

When a hand is split, each card forms a new hand and is then played separately. The original bet amount is applied to the second hand automatically by doubling the chip amount in the bet circle.
NOTE: If you split two Aces, only one more card will be dealt to each hand.
A hand can only be split once meaning, if your third card was the same as the first two, it could not be used to create a third hand.
A two card 21 total on a split is not a natural blackjack. If the hand does not push it will pay even money.

Winning

After the player's final actions, the dealer's down card is revealed. If the dealer's hand is 16 or less, the dealer must continue to hit until reaching 17 or more. The dealer must stand on soft 17 (see Card Values) and cannot take additional cards.

If the dealer busts (exceeds 21), any player hands that haven't busted are winning hands.

When the dealer stands on 17 or greater and has a higher count than the player - the dealer wins; if the player has the higher count - the player wins.

If the player and the dealer have the same totals, it's a push (tie). Your bet is returned to you. If dealer hand busts and player hand busts, dealer absolutely wins.

Basic Strategy

Often, players use the following strategy to assist them in deciding whether to Hit, Stand, Double, or Split.

This strategy does not guarantee that the player will win but is used to improve their percentage of winning.

H=Hit, S=Stand, D=Double Down, SP=Split, NS=Never Split

Game FAQs:

What happens if I am disconnected or close the client during a game?
Any interrupted game will be restored the next time you open the client. If you fail to do this within two hours, your hand(s) will automatically 'stand' and be settled.

How can the exact same card appear more than once during a hand?
Betfair Poker's Blackjack deals from 8 decks which are shuffled before every hand. For this reason it is entirely possible to see the same card more than once in a hand.

Do I earn Betfair Points from playing Betfair Poker's Blackjack?
Currently Betfair Points are not awarded for playing Betfair Poker's Blackjack. However, in the near future this will be implemented.

Yes, we have recently introduced "observer chat". You need to be logged in, but not necessarily seated, to chat..

Can I switch off observer chat and tournament announcements

Yes. Go into your preferences section and you will be presented with the option to turn these off.

What should I do if someone is abusive in the chatbox?

We encourage you to report any offensive behaviour by email to pokerinfo@betfair.com. If possible please include the game (hand) number, or alternatively include screenshots of the offence. You can do this by pressing ‘Ctrl’ + ‘Print Screen’, and then pasting into your email. Abusive and obscene language is not tolerated at Betfair. Offensive Behaviour

Abusive and obscene language will not be tolerated at the tables or in the Betfair Poker Forum. Players who consistently use abusive or obscene language will have their chat and forum rights revoked. Betfair Poker is proud of its strong sense of community amongst our players and so we urge players to report any offensive chat.

Disconnection

What happens if I get disconnected in the middle of a game?

If you are accidentally disconnected by the software during a game, your hand will be folded when your allocated time has expired. If this creates an issue, please contact our helpdesk to investigate the hand.

UK: 0844 871 7000
Outside UK: +44 207 074 7272
pokerinfo@betfair.com

My computer locked up, and I had to reboot. What happened to the hand I was in?

Unfortunately you will have been automatically check-folded if you are not available to make a decision. However if you log back in to the game immediately, you will be able to continue playing at the same table by clicking ‘I’m back’. You can view your hand histories through the "About" section in the lobby.

The server crashed in the middle of a hand. What happened to my money?

Transactions are posted to players' accounts at the completion of every hand. If a hand does not complete for any reason, then all players' accounts are restored as they were at the beginning of the hand. All bets are off and a new hand is dealt.

What happens when a hand is restarted?

Play continues as normal.

Why are disconnected players not removed from the table?

Players are removed from a table if they are disconnected or sit out more than 15 minutes or 8 games. For Tournaments this rule does not apply, they are removed once they are knocked out.

Is there anything that I can try to improve the amount of disconnections?

A task force dedicated to solving this issue went about isolating and providing solutions for the problem of disconnections. A situation where some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are limiting bandwidth through certain ports during peak hours was identified as a potential reason and we’ve therefore gone to work on a solution so that this will not affect you, the players.

Try the following extra functionality that we’ve added to the software:

1. Go to the “Preferences” section of the software.
2. Click on the “Network” tab
3. Click on the "Change Port" button
3. This is defaulted to “Auto”
4. Select one of the alternative ports on offer (five in total)
5. Click “OK”
6. Close down the software and load it up again

A port change could help you with the disconnection problems that you may currently be experiencing. If not, then please try any of the other ports available. Should you not be able to make a connection on the chosen port, you will be given the option to change back to auto after about a minute.

Please bear in mind that there are other possible reasons for disconnections, including weak/poor connections to your server. We would recommend that you always endeavour to play Betfair Poker in an area where your connection speed/wireless connection is medium to high.

In-game Functions

Does the software allow me to muck the winning hand?

No. To protect from accidental mucking of the winning hand at the showdown, the winning hand will always be shown automatically.

How do I use the raise button in no-limit games?

You can use the raise bar/buttons in three different ways:

  • Type a bet/raise amount in the input field.
  • Use the raise bar by clicking on it and move your mouse left/right.
  • Click on the arrows to change amount.

Finally press "enter" or click the bet/raise button to confirm your raise.

What is the timebank?

When playing in a tournament, you are given an extra 30 seconds on top of the normal time allowed. This 30 seconds can be activated at any time via the “TIMEBANK” button, but the 30 seconds is only available once. Thus, if you use 10 seconds of your timebank on one hand, you will have 20 seconds remaining.

Do you get a timebank on the cash tables?

Yes, but only on tables of $0.50/$1.00 and above. You will be allocated 30 seconds of timebank for every hour played.

Yes - Just click on the full table that you wish to join (or stake level) and you will have the option to join the waiting list (button at the bottom of the screen). You will then be given the option to either join that specific table or the next available table at those stake levels.

Money, Chips, Rake and Betfair Points

How do I recognise the Real Money and Fun Money tables?

The table list in the Lobby displays various tabs (top buttons) for each type of tables. Press the tabs to sort by preference.

How many Fun Money chips do I start with?

All players start with 2,000 Fun Money chips.

What happens if I run out of Fun Money?

If your Fun Money chip stack is 300 or less, you get an extra 1,000 chips.

What if I run out of chips during a game?

Just click your seat and the popup "Add More Chips" will appear. Depending on the table type (Stakes, Limit, NL) you have different options for selecting the amount.

What is the rake?

Rake is deducted from every cash game pot at a rate of 5%, up to a predetermined maximum amount which varies according to how many players are in the hand. Below is the maximum rake contribution that will be taken in any given hand. No rake is paid unless the flop is seen – ie. not if the hand is won pre-flop.

Is rake taken if no flop is dealt?

No rake is taken from hands where the flop is not seen.

How is rake attributed to an individual player?

A player is deemed to have contributed to the rake taken on a pot equity basis (by amount staked rather than number of players). For example, if there are 6 players dealt a hand, but only 3 contribute money to the $250 pot, with 2 players contributing $100 each and 1 player contributing $50, the rake of $3 is split (100/250) * 3 = $1.2 to the 2 players who paid $100 and (50/250) * 3 = $0.60 to the player who contributed $50.

How do I earn Betfair Points from poker?

Players earn “Betfair Points” every time they pay rake, be it in a cash game pot or a tournament fee. These are earned at a rate of 1 point for £0.05 of rake paid. All poker games on Betfair Poker are played in $, and so rake paid will be automatically converted at that day’s midrate, as is standard with Betfair.

Security Encryption

Betfair Poker employs the latest technology to safeguard all transactions and protect your personal information.

Random Number Generator

Guaranteeing random cards:

The Betfair Poker Random Number Generator is a True Random Number Generator. It uses the hardware device J1000KU to generate random numbers. It does not use a software algorithm (PRNG). The hardware generator, the QNG Model J1000KU, derives most of its entropy from shot noise. Hence its entropy source is almost entirely quantum and therefore extremely non-deterministic – ie. completely true random. The J1000KU’s output has been tested extensively by the most stringent tests available and it has not failed any test for randomness in tests utilizing up to 500 billion bits. The J1000KU unit has passed Dr. George Marsaglia’s battery of ‘Die Hard’ tests.

Background information:

Software random generators (PRNG): Software RNGs use mathematical algorithms to generate random numbers, initializing the algorithm with a "seed" value derived from some repetitive operation in the computer, such as keystrokes, running processes, the computer's clock, or mouse movements. However, it is extremely difficult to come up with a completely random seed value, since most such operations only provide seeds with a small range of values. The challenge of software RNGs is that the sequence of numbers based on the seed value is completely deterministic, since their creation is accomplished with a software algorithm. So even if the seed value is truly random, the numbers the RNG creates are predictable if someone can figure out the algorithm used to produce them. Thus the numbers generated by software RNGs are not considered truly random, but pseudo-random, and the software RNGs that generate them are known as Pseudo-Random Number Generators (PRNGs).

Hardware random generators (TRNG): Hardware RNGs do not require seeds because hardware random numbers are not computed values; they are not derived through a repeatable algorithm. Rather, hardware-generated random numbers are digitized snapshots of naturally occurring noise. Because there is no algorithm and no repeating sequences of numbers, even if a hacker could determine one number, he would not be able to use it to predict any future numbers. For this reason, hardware RNGs are known as Truly Random Number Generators, or TRNGs.

Slow Performance

Why is everything running slowly?

You may need to update your graphics card driver(s). Locate the graphics card you have installed from your Windows Control Panel. Click the "System" icon, which opens your System Properties. In the top row of menu tabs – press "Hardware" and then click the "Device Manager" button. This opens a new window with all of your hardware settings.

In the list, click the "Display Adapters" to see the name of your graphics card. Use this information to search online for the manufacturer and download the appropriate, latest driver. Finally, restart your computer and start up Betfair Poker again.

System Requirements

I have a Macintosh, can I run the Betfair Poker software?

You can, but to do this you need to have either Parallels and XP installed or VM Fusion. Betfair Poker will run more smoothly in Win 2000, ME and XP.

I have a problem running the software and/or connecting, why?

Your Windows version must be one of these: 2000, ME or XP.
* If it is not brand new then we strongly advise you to update.

Please try the following steps:

  • Update your Windows & DirectX - get the latest Windows patches/upgrades - including DirectX version 9+. Windows Update: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
  • Firewall blocking access - make sure your Firewall is allowing PokerChamps to access the internet. Otherwise you'll not be able to reach our game servers and not be able to play. Firewall settings need to be checked both in installed software (ie. McAfee, Norton etc) and in the Firewall that is included in WinXP. Please consult with the manual, help section or your software manufacturer for correct adjustments.
  • To alter settings in WinXP Firewall - in your Windows Control Panel, choose: "Network" and then: "Firewall settings". The Firewall has 3 setting options, choose: "off" and "OK/Apply" to exit out.

What are the required settings for ports and protocol?

Ports: 4241 + 4242 + 4243
Protocol: TCP

I use AOL as my Internet Service Provider - can this cause a problem?

Old versions of AOL can cause a slow performance (lagging) while in play - sometimes even prevent connection. Please upgrade your version and check with your ISP for troubleshooting and solutions to Internet related problems.

Notice: For some players the solution has been to connect to the Internet WITHOUT using AOL.

Table View Requirements

How do I join a cash table?

To choose a cash table from the Lobby table list, double click on it to open the table. Then click on an empty seat to join the game.

How do I open more than one table?

Players can play on multiple tables at the same time by repeating the process above. If you want to load a new lobby then click on the "Open new window" icon in the top left hand corner.

What do the icons do in the top right of the lobby?

These icons allow you to open new windows and also to arrange (or tile) them in a way that suits you.

Can i change the size of the poker tables and the lobby?

Yes you can, all the windows are scalable, but you must have chosen to play the advanced version of the software. You select the advanced option when you open the software, providing that you have not previously clicked the "don't show me again" option.

Tournaments

What is a Sit & Go Tournament?

A Sit & Go Tournament is a poker tournament which takes place on only one table. Play continues until all players are eliminated, and the last few finishers win prize money. This is the first three in a 9 handed tournament, and the top two in a 6 handed tournament. A tournament will begin automatically when enough players have registered.

What is a Multi Table Tournament?

A Multi Table Tournament (MTT) is a poker tournament where many players play at many tables for the same prize pool. As some players are knocked out the amount of tables in play is gradually reduced, and remaining players on ‘broken’ tables are moved into gaps on tables still in play. Play continues until there is one winner, and usually between the top 10 – 20% receive prize money.

What is the Last Longest Bet or ‘LLB’ tournament?

This ‘tournament’ is not actually a playable event. It is a clever little side bet for those players playing in the main tournament. The idea is you ‘back’ yourself as the player that will last longer in the main event than all other players that have registered into the LLB. Remember – only register into this tournament if you intend to play in that evening’s main event.

To register you will need to enter a password. This password is available to all and can be found in the tournament description after you have clicked on the LLB event name. For your quick reference the password is LLB. Unfortunately as this is a specific side bet there are no refunds for customers that register in the Last Longest Bet event but fail to play in the main event.

What is a Satellite?

A satellite tournament is, along with freerolls, the cheapest route for a chance at the big money prizes. Within the tournament section of your poker lobby you’ll find the required details by selecting the satellites tab. The name of the Satellite will tell you which final tournament you are qualifying to e.g. ‘Rebuy Bullet to $11k GTD’.

Satellites can start from as little as $1.10 and can provide you with a seat worth $109 in the $11,000 Guaranteed. Remember to check your ‘My Tourneys’ section in the lobby after you have won a satellite for more details. Sometimes the tournament you have won a seat into won’t yet have been 'Announced’ and therefore not visible in the lobby. A quick check of the tournament schedule will show you when the tournament is scheduled to start.

Not every Satellite tournament will guarantee a seat. If there is no ‘GTD’ in the tournament name and the total prize pool of that tournament is not enough to cover the cost of a seat in the next level the top ranked position will instead win money – so it’s a win win situation every time.

For Example:

The ‘Next Day Sat to $11k GTD’ has a buy-in of $11.00. For every $109.00 of prize pool that is accumulated the satellite prize pool qualifier receives one seat for the main event. $109.00 would be the equivalent of 11 players registering in the satellite.

What happens if I can’t make it to the tournament I won a seat into?

It is very important that you look ahead to the tournaments that you are playing into. Unfortunately the seats are not transferrable or redeemable in a future event. If you can’t use it you, unfortunately, lose it. So make sure you play with the intention of winning every Satellite – and can make it to the main event.

How do Tournaments differ from cash tables?

  • Players sign up and pay a buy-in fee and house fee prior to playing. The house fee is usually 10% (or lower) of the buy-in.
  • All participants start with the same number of chips.
  • The blinds / antes and table limits increase periodically. This is to ensure that the tournament reaches an end.
  • Prizes are awarded according to how high up the field they finish. This is usually in the range of the top 10 – 20% of the prize pool.
  • Players are not able to purchase additional chips during a freezeout tournament.
  • Rebuy tournaments allow players to buy more chips if they lose their chips and often allow a top-up at the end of the rebuy period.

How do I register for a tournament?

Click on the tournaments tab in the lobby of the software. You will then be presented with a screen showing information about the tournaments on offer, including the tournament name, buy-in, number of players registered, time until start (for multi-table tournaments) and tournament status. If you select a tournament you will then be given more information, and to register simply click the ‘register’ at the top. You will then be asked for confirmation.

Why is the buy-in split into two parts?

The two parts to the buy-in (e.g. $20 + 2) shows how much goes into the prize pool ($20), and the house fee for organising the tournament ($2).

What happens if I decide not to play in the tournament when I have registered?

If you decide to un-register for a tournament before it begins, you can do so by clicking on the tournament you have entered and click the UNREGISTER button. You cannot un-register once the tournament has begun.

How will I know when the tournament is due to start?

In a Sit & Go the table will automatically load up when all the seats are taken. In an MTT, the table will load up when there is 5 minutes until the start. You can force the table to open by locating the tournament in "My Tourneys" and clicking on the relevant tournament.

How are the prizes awarded?

Once the tournament has been completed the system will automatically credit the accounts of the winners. In Sit & Gos, the payout structure is a follows:

9 seater – 1st 50%, 2nd 30%, 3rd 20%
6 seater – 1st 2/3, 2nd 1/3

For MTTs, the prize pool structure depends on the total number of players. For example, in a 75 player tournament, the top 9 will receive a percentage of the prize fund. The amount of players who "cash" in an MTT is always around 10-20% of the field.Click here to see a more detailed breakdown of the prize structure in MTTs.

In a satellite tournament, how do i know what i will be qualifying for?

There is a link in every satellite tournament information panel that will direct you to the tournament that you will be qualifying for.

What happens if I get disconnected during the tournament?

If this happens you will be automatically check-folded. This means that your blinds will be automatically posted when it is your turn to do so, and your hand will be automatically folded when it is your turn to play.
